The table below is a list of active construction along the Purple Line alignment. Notifications can be sorted by work zone for updates on specific locations and also received via text and email through Purple Line Transit Partners’ notification system. Sign up to receive these alerts.

As work increases along the alignment, the Purple Line team remains committed to keeping everyone safe. Pedestrians and motorists are advised to follow construction signage and use the open sidewalk(s). For the safety of the public and our construction team, entry into construction work zones is not permitted.

All

Landscape, erosion and sediment control, and site maintenance along the Purple Line alignment will be conducted on an as needed basis weekdays and weekends from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Bethesda / Chevy Chase

Crews continue utility work on Chevy Chase Lake Drive. This work will, at times, require temporary lane closures on Chevy Chase Lake Drive. However, access will be maintained at all times for both vehicles and pedestrians around the work zone. On-street parking directly adjacent to the work zone will be limited. Please follow the posted signage. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed through March. 

Bethesda / Chevy Chase

Crews continue construction of walls, utility, and track installations, along the former Georgetown Branch Trail between Elm Street Park and Rock Creek Park. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed through March.

Bethesda / Chevy Chase

Crews continue work in the Jones Mill Road underpass area through March. Work includes utility relocations, construction of retaining walls, and completing the east side of Jones Mill Road. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Bethesda / Chevy Chase

Work continues in the area of Connecticut Avenue Purple Line Station. Work includes utility installations, retaining walls and station elements. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Bethesda / Chevy Chase

Crews continue work at the Purple Line Bethesda Station located at Elm Street and Wisconsin Avenue. A long-term lane closure of the southbound right lane of Wisconsin Avenue at Elm Street will continue through completion of the station construction to facilitate a work zone buffer and construction access.  Pedestrians will need to use the signed pedestrian detour to access the northbound side of Wisconsin Avenue.   Work will occur in two shifts from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed. View detour here

College Park

At the College Park Metro station a pedestrian detour is in place around the Purple Line work zone to redirect the walkway between Bowdoin Avenue to River Road underneath the WMATA and MARC tracks.  The underpass itself will not be closed. Pedestrians will be directed to use the open walkway on the east side of the tracks once through the tunnel. Please follow on-site signage. View Here

College Park

Crews continue to work on the Purple Line College Park Station and other works at the College Park Metro Station at River Road and Campus Drive. Pedestrian detours may occur intermittently near the station site. Bus stops will not be impacted. Please follow posted signage.  Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

College Park

On or about March 12, 2024, Purple Line crews will implement a new long-term traffic pattern at the intersection of University Boulevard (MD 193), Campus Drive, and Adelphi Road. Campus Drive west of Adelphi Road will be converted into a one lane westbound-only road, and a work zone will be established to the south to accommodate storm drain installation and roadway widening. Eastbound access to Campus Drive will be maintained via Adelphi Road. Please follow all posted signage. Work may take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., nights and weekends, as necessary. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

College Park

Crews implemented a long-term road closure of Rossborough Lane between Diamondback Drive and the Rhode Island Avenue remains in effect to complete stormwater drainage system installation and roadway reconfiguration. Local access will be maintained, and vehicular and pedestrian detours are in place. Please follow posted signage. The detour will be in place through April 2024. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed. 

College Park

The long-term traffic configuration on Campus Drive between Diamondback Drive and River Road remains in effect. All traffic is shifted to the north side of Campus Drive and a minimum of one lane in each direction will be maintained. A signed pedestrian detour has been implemented to maintain pedestrian access around the work zone. This traffic pattern will be in place until approximately June 2024.

Glenridge / New Carrollton

On or about March 8, 2024, crews will begin phased traffic shifts of Annapolis Road (MD 450) and Veterans Parkway (MD 410) to facilitate the installation of Purple Line tracks across Annapolis Road. Two lanes of traffic and dedicated left turn lanes will be maintained during each phase, and the traffic signal at 76th Avenue will remain operational. The first phase will shift traffic to the south in the intersection. Pedestrian detours may occur as the work progresses. Please follow signage and use caution around the established work zones. Work may take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends as needed.

Glenridge / New Carrollton

The long-term traffic configuration on Ellin Road to the east of the Harkins Drive remains in effect through March. The righthand eastbound lane of traffic is closed to facilitate wall work near the future Purple Line New Carrollton station. Pedestrian detours may also occur as work progresses. Please follow all posted signage. Work may take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends as needed.

Glenridge / New Carrollton

The long-term traffic shift on Ellin Road between Emerson Place and Hanson Oaks Drive remains in effect. Two-way traffic is shifted to the north side of Ellin Road and the south side is closed to allow the continuation of Purple Line construction. View traffic shift here

Glenridge / New Carrollton

Work continues on the Purple Line Glenridge Station located near the corner of Veterans Parkway (MD 410) and Annapolis Road (MD 450).  Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Glenridge / New Carrollton

Crews implemented The traffic shift on Veterans Parkway (MD410) to reduce the southbound lanes to one lane for approximately a quarter of a mile, while northbound lanes will remain as two thru lanes. The closure is to facilitate the installation of Purple Line track across Veterans Parkway. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed. View traffic shift here

Glenridge / New Carrollton

Crews continue construction at the Glenridge Operations and Maintenance Facility. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Greater Lyttonsville / Woodside

Until approximately March 22, 2024, the Rock Creek Trail will be closed for at the location of the Purple Line Bridge. This closure is required to allow crews to remove diversion piping, rehabilitate Rock Creek under the bridge, and make repairs to the trail. Work may take place in multiple shifts from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. as needed to complete the work before the spring environmental restrictions take place.

A signed detour has been established around the closed portion of Trail. Please follow all signs and avoid entering into the work zone. View detour here

Greater Lyttonsville / Woodside

Crews continue to work on the Talbot Avenue Bridge and adjacent streets. Work includes building the ramp from Talbot Avenue to the new bridge and reconstruction of surrounding roads. Grace Church Road continues to be closed to through traffic at the bridge location. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.   

Greater Lyttonsville / Woodside

Crews continue construction of walls and installation of stormwater drainage, walls and other utilities adjacent to the CSX/Metro tracks between Talbot Avenue and the Silver Spring Transit Center.  Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Greater Lyttonsville / Woodside

Talbot Avenue between Michigan Avenue and Lanier Drive remains closed to through traffic for roadway reconstruction until approximately April, 2024. Local access will be maintained for residents; on street parking will be restricted in the work zone.  This work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed, weather permitting. 

Greater Lyttonsville / Woodside

Crews continue construction of retaining walls and the installation of utilities along the alignment from Rock Creek to Talbot Avenue. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Long Branch

On or about April 1, 2024, Purple Line crews will close the existing entrance to the Long Branch Community Center and open the new, permanent. The new entryway will align with the signalized intersection on Barron Street. Access to the Long Branch Community Center will be maintained for pedestrians throughout construction.  View Here

Beginning March 8, 2024, lane closures will be implemented on Piney Branch Road at 6 a.m. between University Boulevard East and Arliss Street. Piney Branch Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction through the weekend. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes during peak hours. Please follow all posted signage. 

Long Branch

Barron Street remains one-way northbound, between Gilbert Place and Piney Branch Road. Residents will be able to make left and right hand turns from Barron Street onto Piney Branch Road. Local traffic will have access to Barron Street via Gilbert Street or Seek Lane. A work zone on Barron Street will be established to facilitate curb, sidewalk, and roadway reconstruction. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed. Access to the Foxhall Apartments parking lot will be maintained at all times. View detour here 

Long Branch

Crews implemented the long-term closure of Arliss Street between Piney Branch Road and Garland Avenue to allow crews to install utilities and construct the Purple Line's Long Branch Station. A temporary driveway has been constructed to the Flower Branch Apartments, and a detour for vehicles and pedestrians is in place. The Long Branch Library will be accessed by turning north on Flower Avenue and east on Plymouth Street. Please follow the posted signage. Long Branch

The traffic shift on Piney Branch Road (MD 320) that places a work zone in the middle of the road between Garland Avenue and University Boulevard remains in effect. Two lanes are open during the evenings and overnight hours, while one lane of traffic is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. northbound and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. southbound. This configuration will remain in place through Summer 2024. Please follow all posted signage.

Long Branch

Crews continue work along Piney Branch Road (MD 320) from Greenwood Avenue to University Boulevard (MD 193). Crews continue installation of utilities and constructing walls, sidewalks and curbing. Pedestrian access will be maintained using temporary detours; please follow onsite signage. Access to driveways and businesses on will be maintained. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Long Branch

Crews continue work on the Plymouth Tunnel and the Manchester Place Station. Work includes construction of the concrete west portal at Wayne Avenue, utility work and preparation for track installation within the tunnel.  The work zone for the upper section of the Manchester Place Station located on Plymouth Street in Silver Spring will be accessed via Plymouth Street, residential parking will not be impacted.   Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Riverdale Park

On or about March 4, 2024, the intersection of East-West Highway and Kenilworth Avenue will be closed nightly Monday night through Thursday night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for approximately six weeks. Additional nights may occur in the case of weather delays. Right-hand turn lanes will be open from East-West Highway and Kenilworth Avenue. Through traffic will be required to use the approved detours as detailed. This closure is necessary to install the Purple Line bridge safely from Kenilworth Avenue to the aerial Riverdale Park – Kenilworth station. View Here  

Riverdale Park

Crews implemented a long-term traffic shift on Riverdale Road (MD-410) between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Veterans Parkway to allow the construction of the Beacon Heights-East Pines Station. The travel lanes have been shifted to the north. Two lanes in each direction and pedestrian access will be maintained. View here

Riverdale Park

Work continues along Kenilworth Avenue (MD 201) between River Road and the East-West Highway (MD 410) through March. Work includes stormwater drainage  installation and roadway work in preparation of track installation. This includes the work zone in the middle lanes of Kenilworth Avenue for the construction of a bridge leading to the new Riverdale Park-Kenilworth Station. Access to driveways, businesses and bus service will be maintained. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed. 

Riverdale Park

Crews continue work on the Purple Line adjacent to River Road from the College Park Metro Station to Kenilworth Avenue. Pedestrian detours may occur intermittently.  Bus stops will not be impacted. Please follow posted signage.  Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Riverdale Park

Crews continue work on the Riverdale Park-Kenilworth elevated station located at the corner of Riverdale Road (MD 410) and Kenilworth Avenue (MD 201).  The work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed, weather permitting.  

Riverdale Park

Crews continue utility installation, track preparations and roadway work along eastbound Riverdale Road (MD 410) between Mustang Drive and  Eastpine Drive. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with periodic work, including lane closures during the overnight hours between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed, weather permitting. 

Riverdale Park

Crews continue work in the area of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Riverdale Road (MD 410). Lane closures may be implemented on a daily basis.  The work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed, weather permitting.

Silver Spring

Crews continue work on the Wayne Avenue bridge over Sligo Creek, including foundations for the new bridge, concrete, and stream restoration. The work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and nights 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Silver Spring

During the month of March, crews will be periodically working weekends and holiday breaks on the property of the Silver Spring International Middle School. This is required to avoid disruptions to students during school hours.  Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Silver Spring

Crews will implement periodic overnight lane closures and pedestrian detours on Colesville Road between Wayne Avenue and East-West Highway. At least one lane on Colesville Road will remain open in each direction. The overnight closures are required to safely complete work on the Purple Line elevated sections over Colesville Road. The work will occur between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. at periodic intervals through Spring 2024. Please follow on-site signage.

Silver Spring

Crews continue utility work on Ramsey Avenue between Wayne Avenue and Bonifant Street. The utility work will require traffic shifts and periodic lane closures but will remain accessible at all times. Pedestrians will be directed to use the sidewalk on the east side of Ramsey Avenue. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Silver Spring

Crews continue work on the Purple Line’s Silver Spring Library station located at the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library. Access to the library and businesses surrounding the library including Bonifant Street will be maintained at all times. ADA-compliant pedestrian access will be maintained to and around the library via Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street. Pedestrian pathways may change intermittently around the work zone; please follow on-site signage. Fencing has been installed to delineate the work zone to allow excavation, utility relocations, systems, and trackwork. Access to Bonifant Street will remain one-way, eastbound from Georgia Avenue. Construction may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed through June 2024.

Silver Spring

Purple Line work will continue around the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center as crews continue construction of  the  Purple Line Station and the Mezzanine to the Metro and MARC stations.  ADA-compliant pedestrian access will be maintained with intermittent changes to walkways around the work zone; please follow on-site signage. Access to the transit center will be maintained at all times around the Purple Line work zone. Construction may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Silver Spring

Crews have implemented the long-term traffic configuration on Wayne Avenue (MD 595A) between Sligo Creek Parkway and Fenton Street, reducing the road to one lane in each direction for continued utility relocations, installation of stormwater systems and reconstruction of the curb, sidewalk, and roadway. Access to residents’ properties and driveways will be maintained, while street parking within the work zones is prohibited. Pedestrian access along Wayne Avenue will be maintained with at least one sidewalk open at all times. Please follow posted signage for pedestrian detours when applicable. Temporary lane closures will be implemented 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. while work in the area may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed through June 2024.

The pedestrian detour for the Sligo Creek Trail and Sligo Cabin Neighborhood Park remains in effect around the work zone and the adjacent parking lot. Please follow posted signage. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed through Spring 2024.

Crews continue utility work on Wayne Avenue (MD 594A) from Sligo Creek Parkway to Flower Avenue. Temporary lane closures may occur 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed. Temporary sidewalk closures will occur as needed. 

Silver Spring

The long-term pedestrian detour remains in effect for the crosswalks across Georgia Avenue (MD 29) at Bonifant Street. Pedestrians will be directed to use the crosswalk located a block south at Thayer Avenue. Please follow posted signage for the pedestrian detour. Bonifant Street (East) will remain open to eastbound vehicular traffic and pedestrians. Access to all businesses along Bonifant Street will be maintained during construction.  Construction will continue Bonifant Street East and West through Summer 2024.  View detour here

Silver Spring

Crews implemented the long-term lane closure of Bonifant Street (west) between Ramsey Street and Georgia Avenue will remain in effect for construction. Pedestrian access will be maintained during the road closure. Pedestrians must obey construction signs and stay out of the work zone for their safety and the safety of the construction crew.

Crews continue work on the Plymouth Tunnel and the Manchester Place Station. University Boulevard

On or about March 25, 2024, crews will implement a closure of 15th Avenue at the University Boulevard (MD 193) intersection to install new curb and sidewalk as well as pave the intersection. Access to 15th Avenue will be maintained via Kanawha Street. Please follow posted signage for the detour route. Work may take place weekdays and weekends, for two weeks.  View here

University Boulevard

On or about March 11, 2024 crews will implement a closure of 14th Avenue at the University Boulevard (MD 193) intersection to install new curb and sidewalk as well as pave the intersection. Access to 14th Avenue will be maintained via Kanawha Street. Please follow posted signage for the detour route. Work may take place weekdays and weekends, for two weeks.

University Boulevard

On or about March 12, 2024, Purple Line crews will implement a new traffic pattern on University Boulevard E, from West Park Dr until Tulane Dr. Eastbound traffic on University Boulevard E will be pushed south over the newly completed Northwest Branch bridge. A work zone will be established between eastbound and westbound traffic on University Blvd to begin prep work for track and underground conduit installation. Work may take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., nights and weekends, as necessary. Pedestrian access will be maintained. Please follow all posted signage.

University Boulevard

On or about March 4, 2024, Purple Line crews will close the turning lane from northbound Carroll Avenue (MD 195) onto eastbound University Boulevard E (MD 193). This work is to facilitate new curbs, island construction, and roadway paving. Right turns onto University Boulevard E (193) will remain. This work is scheduled to last approximately one month from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., nights and weekends when necessary. Please follow all posted signage.

University Boulevard

Crews implemented the long-term left lane closure on University Boulevard westbound between Merrimac Drive and Carroll Avenue remains in effect through March. This closure is to facilitate storm drain installation. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., nights and weekends when necessary. Please follow all posted signage. 

University Boulevard

Overnight utility relocation work continues across University Boulevard (MD 193) between Piney Branch Road (MD 320) and Adelphi Road. This periodic work will require temporary lane closures and may occur 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

University Boulevard

Purple Line crews continue storm drain installation on the service road along westbound University Boulevard (MD 193) East between Merrimac Drive and Carroll Avenue. NO PARKING will be allowed on the service road for the duration of work. The service road will remain open for local access only.  Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

University Boulevard

Crews implemented the long-term lane closure for westbound University Boulevard (MD 193) between Carroll Avenue (MD 195) and Piney Branch Road (MD 320). Access to businesses and resident's properties along with pedestrian access on University Boulevard (MD 193) will be maintained. Please follow posted signage. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

University Boulevard

Crews implemented the long-term lane closure for westbound University Boulevard (MD 193) between West Park Drive and Merrimac Drive remains in effect through summer 2024. Access to businesses and resident's properties along with pedestrian access on University Boulevard (MD 193) will be maintained. Please follow posted signage. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

University Boulevard

Crews implemented the long-term lane closure of the righthand eastbound turn lane from University Boulevard (MD 193) onto Riggs Road (MD 212) through summer 2024. Turning vehicles will use the thru lane to turn during this phase. The closure will be implemented to facilitate ongoing storm drain installation and utility relocations. Please follow posted signage around the work zone. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

University Boulevard

Crews implemented the long-term lane closure of the righthand eastbound turn lane from University Boulevard (MD 193) onto New Hampshire Avenue (MD 650) through summer 2024. Turning vehicles will use the thru lane to turn during this phase. The closure will be implemented to facilitate ongoing storm drain installation, utility relocations and the construction of a retaining wall. University Boulevard
