The table below is a list of active construction along the Purple Line alignment. Notifications can be sorted by work zone for updates on specific locations and also received via text and email through Purple Line Transit Partners’ notification system. Sign up to receive these alerts.

Maryland Transit Solutions has begun due diligence inspections along the Purple Line alignment in advance of construction activities occurring. Area-specific construction notifications will continue as construction activities increase in upcoming months. As work increases along the alignment, the Purple Line team remains committed to keeping everyone safe. Pedestrians and motorists are advised to follow construction signage and use the open sidewalk(s). For the safety of the public and our construction team, entry into construction work zones is not permitted.

Landscape, erosion and sediment control, and site maintenance along the Purple Line alignment will be conducted on an as needed basis weekdays and weekends from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Bethesda / Chevy Chase

Crews continue work in the Jones Mill Road underpass area through January. Work includes utility relocation, construction of retaining walls, and completing the east side of Jones Mill Road. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and overnight 8 pm to 5 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Bethesda / Chevy Chase

Crews continue construction of noise walls along the former Georgetown Branch Trail in the area near East-West Highway.  Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Work continues on the Light Rail Bridge over Connecticut Avenue during the month of January, temporary lane closures may be implemented on Connecticut Avenue between Chevy Chase Lake Drive and Laird Place. One lane will be closed during daytime hours, and up to two lanes will be closed overnight. Lane closures will occur during non-peak hours between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Bethesda / Chevy Chase

On or about, January 18, 2023, Connecticut Avenue will be closed to place the new Capital Crescent Trail pedestrian bridge over Connecticut Avenue adjacent to the Purple Line light rail bridge. A detour will be implemented beginning at 9 p.m. through 5 a.m. Thursday. 

Bethesda / Chevy Chase

Crews have resumed work at the future Purple Line Bethesda Station located at Elm Street and Wisconsin Avenue. A long-term lane closure of the southbound right lane of Wisconsin Avenue at Elm Street will continue through completion of the station construction to facilitate a work zone buffer and construction access.  Pedestrians will need to use the signed pedestrian detour to access the northbound side of Wisconsin Avenue.   Work will occur in two shifts from 7 a.m. 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

College Park

Crews continue utility relocations along Campus Drive between Baltimore Avenue (US Route 1) and River Road through January. Temporary lane closures may occur 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends, as needed.

College Park

On November 21, 2022, crews implemented a long-term traffic configuration on Campus Drive between Diamondback Drive and River Road. All traffic is shifted to the north side of Campus Drive and a minimum of one lane in each direction will be maintained. A signed pedestrian detour has been implemented to maintain pedestrian access around the work zone. This traffic pattern will be in place for approximately one year.

College Park

Crews continue utility relocations at the intersection of Baltimore Avenue (US Route 1) and Rossborough Lane through January, weather permitting. Temporary lane closures on Baltimore Avenue (US Route 1) may occur overnight between 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

On December 27, 2022, Crews implemented a long-term road closure of Rossborough Lane between Diamondback Drive and the Rhode Island Avenue as crews complete draining and roadwork including installation of tracks and completion of the new connection to Campus Drive.  Local access will be maintained, and vehicular and pedestrian detours are in place. Please follow posted signage. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed. 

Glenridge / New Carrollton

On or about February 13, 2023, crews will implement new traffic configuration on Veterans Parkway (MD 410) near Ellin Road for approximately two months. Southbound Lanes of Veterans Parkway (MD 410) will be reduced to one lane for approximately a quarter of a mile, while northbound lanes will remain as two thru lanes. The closure is to facilitate the installation of Purple Line track across Veterans Parkway (MD 410).  Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Glenridge / New Carrollton

On or about January 16, 2023, crews will continue work on the new Purple Line Glenridge Station located near the corner of Veterans Parkway and Annapolis Road. Work will start with site preparations followed by utility, station elements and rail placement.  This station is part of the proposed system test track and will be among the first finished in 2024. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Crews continue construction at the Glenridge Operations and Maintenance Facility  through January. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and weekends,  as-needed basis.

Greater Lyttonsville / Woodside

Crews continue construction of retaining walls and the installation of Overhead Catenary System pole foundations near the Lyttonsville Place Bridge from Rock Creek to Talbot Avenue through January. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Greater Lyttonsville / Woodside

On December 19, 2022, crews closed through traffic access on Talbot Avenue between Michigan Avenue and Lanier Drive. Local access will be maintained for residents; on street parking will be restricted in the work zone. The roadway reconstruction will include installation of new curbs, sidewalks, and residential driveway aprons. This work will occur for approximately four months and may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed, weather permitting.  

Long Branch

Crews continue work on the Plymouth Tunnel and the Manchester Place Station through January. Work will include demolition of the temporary walls at the west portal at Wayne Avenue, utility work and preparation for track installation within the tunnel. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Crews continue utility work along Piney Branch Road(MD 320) from Greenwood Avenue to University Boulevard (MD 193) through April 2023. Crews will be installing storm drain systems and reconstructing the sidewalk and curbing. Pedestrian access will be maintained using temporary detours; please follow onsite signage. Access to driveways and businesses on will be maintained. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Long Branch

On or about January 9, 2023, crews will begin work where Long Branch waterway crosses under Piney Branch Road to set up erosion and sediment control measures, install  stormwater drainage structures, and complete a new fish passage and other improvements. This work is expected to take six months. Pedestrian walkways and access to the Long Branch Community Center will remain open during construction. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

On or about February 1, 2023, crews will continue work on the upper section of the Manchester Place Station located on Plymouth Street in Silver Spring. The work zone will be accessed via Plymouth Street, residential parking will not be impacted.  Work may occur 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Riverdale Park

Crews continue work on the Purple Line Riverdale Park North-UMD station located near the traffic circle at River Road and Haig Drive. Work will start with site preparations followed by utility, station elements and rail placement.  This station scheduled to be among the first finished in 2024. Work may occur 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

On or about February 13, 2023, crews will implement a long-term traffic shift on Kenilworth Avenue from River Road to Riverdale Road, impacting the southbound travel lanes. Access to businesses and resident's properties along with pedestrian access on Kenilworth Avenue will be maintained. Street parking in work zones will be prohibited. Please follow posted signage. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Riverdale Park

Crews continue utility relocations between 58th Street and Veterans Parkway (MD 410) through January, weather permitting. Work may occur in two shifts, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed. 

Riverdale Park

Crews continue construction of the Traction Power Substation (TPSS) foundation located on the cul-de-sac of Patterson Street. Crews will access Paterson Street via 66th Street. Work will include site grading, and construction of the foundation for the TPSS. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed through January.  

Riverdale Park

Crews continue the installation of storm drains along eastbound Riverdale Road between Mustang Drive to the Eastpine Drive through January. The work will may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed, weather permitting.  

Riverdale Park

Crews continue work on the Riverdale Park-Kenilworth elevated station located at the corner of Riverdale Road and Kenilworth Avenue through January.  The work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed, weather permitting.  

Silver Spring

Purple Line work will continue around the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center as crews continue construction the  Purple Line Station and the Mezzanine access to the Metro and MARC stations.  ADA-compliant pedestrian access will be maintained with intermittent changes to walkways around the work zone; please follow on-site signage. Access to the Transit Center will be maintained at all times around the Purple Line work zone. Construction may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Silver Spring

On or about January 23, 2023, crews will begin work on the Purple Line’s Silver Spring Library station located at the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library. Access to the library and businesses surrounding the library including Bonifant Street will be maintained at all times. ADA-compliant pedestrian access will be maintained to and around the library via Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street. Pedestrian pathways will change intermittently around the work zone; please follow on-site signage. Fencing will be installed to delineate the work zone immediately followed by excavation, utility relocations, systems, and trackwork. Access to Bonifant Street will remain one-way, eastbound from Georgia Avenue. Construction may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed through December 2023.

Silver Spring

Implementation of the long-term lane closures on Wayne Avenue between Fenton Street and Dale Drive has been postponed. Work will occur using daily lane closures with flagging operations until the long-term closures are implemented. Access to residents' properties and driveways, along with pedestrian access on Wayne Avenue will be maintained. Street parking in work zones will be prohibited. Please follow posted signage for pedestrian detours. Lane closures will be implemented 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. while work in the area may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Silver Spring

On or about January 23, 2022, crews will implement a long-term lane closure and new traffic configuration on Wayne Avenue between Sligo Creek Parkway and Mansfield Road. This will impact Sligo Creek Trail and Sligo Cabin Neighborhood Park. A detour for the trail will be established around the work zone, and the parking lot will be closed. Please follow posted signage. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed for the next 12 months. Crews continue reconstruction of the Bradford Place Apartments parking lot.  Work may be performed in two shifts, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed through February 2023.

Crews continue installation of stormwater drainage in the area of the Purple Line bridge over Rock Creek through January. No trail closures are planned at this time, but pedestrians may be flagged intermittently around active work zones when necessary. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.  Nightwork may be required to allow the trail to remain open during the daytime hours.  

Silver Spring

Crews continue utility relocations on Wayne Avenue (MD 594A) from Sligo Creek Parkway to Flower Avenue. Temporary lane closures may occur 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends, as needed through February 2023. Overnight work will occur intermittently, as scheduled by utility companies. Flagging operations will be utilized on E. Wayne Avenue between Sligo Creek Parkway and Manchester Road, motorists should plan for and expect delays. Temporary sidewalk closures will occur as needed. 

Silver Spring

On October 11, 2021, a long-term traffic pattern change was implemented on Bonifant (East) between Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street to reduce the road to a one-way eastbound street. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed. Long-term lane closures and intermittent sidewalk closures will occur. ADA-complaint pedestrian, vehicular, and business access will be maintained at all times with reduced on-street parking. Flagging operations may be utilized when needed.

Silver Spring

On May 11, 2020, the Purple Line implemented a closure of Bonifant Street (west) between Ramsey Street and Georgia Avenue for construction. The closure will remain in place until work is complete. Pedestrian access will be maintained during the road closure. Pedestrians must obey construction signs and stay out of the work zone for their safety and the safety of the construction crew.

Silver Spring

Crews continue utility relocations along eastbound Wayne Avenue (MD 594A) from Silver Spring International Middle School (SSIMS) to Springvale Road through January, weather permitting. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed. A long-term lane closure with a jersey barrier will be established in the far-right eastbound lane, access to driveways will be maintained. The sidewalk adjacent to the work zone will be closed and pedestrians will be directed to use the nearest crosswalk via signage..

Crews continue to implement daily lane closures at the intersection of Georgia Avenue (US 29) and Bonifant Street for underground utility relocations through January, weather permitting. Work may take place in two shifts, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Silver Spring

Crews continue work at the Manchester Place Station located on East Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring. Work consists of the removal of the temporary walls followed by installation of concrete walls to continue the tunnel portal and station. Work may take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends as needed

University Boulevard

On or about February 23, 2023, Purple Line crews will implement a long-term closure of the westbound shoulder on University Boulevard (MD 193) from Temple Street to Adelphi Road through the end of 2023. This closure will be in place to allow for stormwater drainage facility installation. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed. 

University Boulevard

Purple Line implemented a long-term traffic switch on University Boulevard (MD 193) between Tulane Drive and 24th Avenue. The travel lanes shifted on to the newly completed bridge over the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River. Two lanes in each direction and pedestrian access will be maintained including a temporary channelized pedestrian pathway. A new work zone will be established to begin construction of the south bridge over the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River. Work includes demolition of existing bridge, foundation work and concrete for new bridge.  Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

University Boulevard

Crews continue utility relocations on University Boulevard (MD 193) between Piney Branch Road(MD 320) and Riggs Road (MD 212) through January. Temporary lane closures may occur 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

University Boulevard

A long-term lane closure for the eastbound right lane of University Boulevard (MD 193) between Piney Branch Road (MD 320) and New Hampshire Avenue will continue to facilitate utility relocations through January. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed. Access to driveways and businesses will be maintained.

University Boulevard

Crews continue stormwater drainage installation along the University Boulevard (MD 193) service road between 24th Avenue and West Park Drive through February 2023. During work hours, the service road will be limited to one lane. Parking will be prohibited in the areas adjacent to the work zones to allow through traffic to continue to use the service road. Work may take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

University Boulevard

Beginning on or about January 9, 2023 crews will continue storm drain installation across University Boulevard (MD 193) near Seek Lane and near Forston Street. This construction will start in the eastbound lanes and progress to the westbound lanes utilizing temporary lane closures. Work may occur between two shifts 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for two weeks. Bus stops at Seek Lane will be closed during this work, please follow signage posted at the closed bus stop. 

University Boulevard

Crews continue to implement daily closures of the University Boulevard (MD 193) service road between 14th Avenue and 15th Avenue will continue for the installation of stormdrain systems through January. Street parking in the work zone will be prohibited, please follow posted signage. Residential and pedestrian access will be maintained. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.
