The table below is a list of active construction along the Purple Line alignment. Notifications can be sorted by work zone for updates on specific locations and also received via text and email through Purple Line Transit Partners’ notification system. Sign up to receive these alerts.

Maryland Transit Solutions has begun due diligence inspections along the Purple Line alignment in advance of construction activities occurring. Area-specific construction notifications will continue as construction activities increase in upcoming months. As work increases along the alignment, the Purple Line team remains committed to keeping everyone safe. Pedestrians and motorists are advised to follow construction signage and use the open sidewalk(s). For the safety of the public and our construction team, entry into construction work zones is not permitted.

Landscape, erosion and sediment control, and site maintenance along the Purple Line alignment will be conducted on an as needed basis weekdays and weekends from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Greater Lyttonville / Woodside

A noise waiver has been requested to support nighttime construction activities between 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., related to sewer and waterline relocations between 16th Street and Fenwick Lane. The construction has been sequenced to minimize overnight impacts by performing prep work during daytime hours. Night work is scheduled to begin on the north side of the CSX tracks, with tunneling operations under the tracks ending on the south side. This work is scheduled to occur October 17, 2022 through November 30, 2022, weather permitted.   For more information please review the noise waiver here. Greater Lyttonville / Woodside

Crews resumed construction of retaining walls near the Lyttonsville Place Bridge. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Long Branch

Crews remobilized to the Plymouth Tunnel and the Manchester Place Station. Work will include site cleanup, concrete work and preparation for track installation within the tunnel. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Long Branch

Crews have implemented daily lane closure of the northbound shoulder on Piney Branch Road between Arliss Street to Garland Avenue to begin site preparations for the storm drain installation. Pedestrian access will be maintained with intermittent flagging operations, as needed. Local bus stops will not be impacted during by the work. Work may take place 7 a.m. through 7 p.m. with the shoulder lane closure occurring between 7 a.m. through 4 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed through September. 

Bethesda/Chevy Chase

A noise waiver has been requested to support nighttime construction activities between 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., related to a waterline relocation on Jones Mill Road between Jones Bridge Road and Coquelin Terrace. The construction has been sequenced to minimize overnight impacts by performing prep work during daytime hours. Night work is scheduled to minimize water disruptions to residents and traffic impacts, as Jones Mill Road will be reduced to a one lane road with flagging operations. This work is scheduled to occur October 24, 2022 through October 28, 2022, weather depending.   For more information please review the noise waiver here. Bethesda/Chevy Chase

Crews resumed work in the Jones Mill Road underpass area. Work includes utility relocation, construction of retaining walls, and completing the east side of Jones Mill Road. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Crews continue construction of noise walls along the former Georgetown Branch Trail using East-West Highway access points. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Bethesda/Chevy Chase

Beginning on or about October 5, 2022, temporary lane closures will be implemented on Connecticut Avenue between Chevy Chase Lake Drive and Laird Place. Work will take place for approximately two weeks for the installation of overhang brackets and forms, the first steps towards completing the bridge over Connecticut Avenue. One lane will be closed during daytime hours, and up to two lanes will be closed overnight. Lane closures will occur during non-peak hours between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Bethesda/Chevy Chase

Crews have resumed work at the future Purple Line Bethesda Metro Station located at Elm Street and Wisconsin Avenue. A long-term lane closure of the southbound right lane of Wisconsin Avenue at Elm Street will be implemented on or about September 14, 2022, through completion of the station construction to facilitate a work zone buffer and construction access.  Pedestrians will need to use the signed pedestrian detour to access the northbound side of Wisconsin Avenue.   Work will occur in two shifts from 7 a.m. 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

College Park

Crews continue utility relocations along Campus Drive between Baltimore Avenue (US Route 1) and River Road through October. Temporary lane closures may occur 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends, as needed.

Glenridge / New Carrollton

On or about October 12, 2022, crews will implement a long-term traffic switch on Ellin Road between Emerson Place and Hanson Oaks Drive. Two-way traffic will be shifted to the north side of Ellin Road to continue Purple Line construction as indicated in the graphic ( Here).

On or about September 10, 2022, the Purple Line will continue utility work by excavating and placing stormwater inlets along Ellin Road between Hanson Oaks Drive and Emerson Place in the currently closed section of the roadway.  Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.        

Glenridge / New Carrollton

On September 29, 2021, long-term lane closures were implemented on Veterans Parkway (MD 410) between Riverdale Road (MD 410) and Ellin Road for approximately 15 months for water line relocation.  An additional work zone has been established within vacant lots adjacent to Veterans Parkway (MD 410) and Annapolis Road (MD 450). Work will take place 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed through completion of the work.

Riverdale Park

Crews continue utility relocations between 58th Street and Veterans Parkway (MD 410) through October, weather permitting. Work may occur in two shifts, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Crews will continue construction of the Traction Power Substation (TPSS) foundation located on the cul-de-sac of Patterson Street. Crews will access Paterson Street via 66th Street. Work will include site grading, and construction of the foundation for the TPSS. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed through the end of 2022.  

Silver Spring

Crews continue utility relocations on Ramsey Avenue between Bonifant Street and the Silver Spring Transit Center through November. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed. Pedestrian access will be maintained around the work zone.

Silver Spring

Crews continue work in the Rock Creek park area on the Purple Line bridge over Rock Creek. Work includes placement of the light rail vehicle bridge deck. Work may take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends. At this time, no trail closures are planned but pedestrians may be flagged intermittently around active work zones. 

Silver Spring

Crews continue utility relocations on Wayne Avenue (MD 594A) from Sligo Creek Parkway to Flower Avenue. Temporary lane closures may occur 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends, as needed. Overnight work will occur intermittently, as scheduled by utility companies. Flagging operations will be utilized on E. Wayne Avenue between Sligo Creek Parkway and Manchester Road, motorists should plan for and expect delays. Temporary sidewalk closures will occur as needed. 

Silver Spring

On October 11, 2021, a long-term traffic pattern change was implemented on Bonifant (East) between Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street to reduce the road to a one-way eastbound street. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed. Long-term lane closures and intermittent sidewalk closures will occur. ADA-complaint pedestrian, vehicular, and business access will be maintained at all times with reduced on-street parking. Flagging operations may be utilized when needed.

Silver Spring

On May 11, 2020, the Purple Line implemented a closure of Bonifant Street (west) between Ramsey Street and Georgia Avenue for construction. The closure will remain in place until work is complete. Pedestrian access will be maintained during the road closure. Pedestrians must obey construction signs and stay out of the work zone for their safety and the safety of the construction crew.

Silver Spring

Crews continue utility relocations along eastbound Wayne Avenue (MD 594A) from Silver Spring International Middle School (SSIMS) to Springvale Road through December, weather permitting. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed. A long-term lane closure with a jersey barrier will be established in the far-right eastbound lane, access to driveways will be maintained. The sidewalk adjacent to the work zone will be closed and pedestrians will be directed to use the nearest crosswalk via signage.

Crews continue utility relocations at the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street. Temporary lane closures may occur 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed through October, weather permitting. Temporary sidewalk closures may occur with flagging operations as needed.

Crews continue to implement daily lane closures at the intersection of Georgia Avenue (US 29) and Bonifant Street for underground utility relocations through October, weather permitting. Work may take place in two shifts, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Boulevard

Crews continue utility relocations on University Boulevard (MD 193) between Piney Branch Road and Riggs Road through December. Temporary lane closures may occur 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

University Boulevard

Crews continue utility relocations along University Boulevard (MD 193) between Riggs Road (MD 212) and Adelphi Road. Temporary lane closures may occur in two shifts, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed

University Boulevard

Crews continue utility relocations at the intersection of University Boulevard (MD 193) and Riggs Road (MD 212). Work will take place overnight weekdays and as needed, weekends through October, weather permitting. Temporary lane closures will occur 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. with a minimum of one lane in each direction on University Boulevard (MD 193) and Riggs Road (MD 212) maintained around the work zone. Access to local businesses will be maintained. On an as-needed basis, pedestrian detours will be implemented and signed

University Boulevard

Crews continue utility relocations at the intersection of Edwards Place and University Boulevard (MD 193) through October, weather permitting. Temporary lane closures may occur 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed. Parking adjacent to the work zone may be limited during work hours.

for underground utility relocations. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed. Pedestrian access will be maintained during the road closure.  Pedestrians must obey construction signs and stay out of the work zone for their safety and the safety of the construction crew.
University BoulevardCrews will begin stormwater drain installation along the University Boulevard East service road between 24th Avenue and West Park Drive through October. Removal of the dividing curb will occur to facilitate the work zone. During work hours, the service road will be limited to one lane. Parking will be prohibited in the areas adjacent to the work zones to allow through traffic to continue to use the service road. Work may take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.
University BoulevardCrews will continue utility relocations on Guilford Road between University Boulevard (MD 193) and Fordham Street through October, weather permitting.  Work may take place 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed. Parking in the shoulder around the work zone will be restricted through completion of the work.
University BoulevardOn or about September 28, 2022, crews will begin storm drain installation across University Boulevard near Seek Lane and near Forston Street. This construction will start in the eastbound lanes and progress to the westbound lanes utilizing temporary lane closures. Work may occur between two shifts 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for two weeks. Bus stops at Seek Lane will be closed during this work, please follow signage post at the closed bus stops.
University Boulevard

Crews continue installing storm drain lines along University Boulevard E and the service road between 24th Avenue and West Park Drive through October. This work will include the removal of the current barrier curb separating the access road and University Boulevard. E.  During the operations, the access road will be limited to one lane. Parking will be prohibited in the areas adjacent to the work zones to allow through traffic to continue to use the access road. Work may take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends.
